Empowering the Next Generation: Youth Saving Clubs Launched in Kisumu, Kenya

In a major step toward economic empowerment, Youth for a Sustainable World (YSW), formally DSW Kenya, through the VIVA Project, has helped young people establish 25 Youth Saving and Loaning Associations (YSLAs) across Kisumu. These youth-led saving clubs are designed to equip members with the financial tools and knowledge they need to build stronger, more sustainable futures.

The formation of these YSLAs followed a successful mapping and engagement process to identify groups interested and capable of running these initiatives. It all came together during a vibrant launch event attended by key stakeholders—including representatives from the State Department of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy (SDYACE), Kisumu’s gender sector working group, and YSW staff—alongside the youth themselves.

During the event, the newly elected YSLA leaders got a firsthand look at how these groups operate through a live simulation of a savings meeting. They also received critical information on accessing government funding opportunities like the Uwezo Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, and the Youth Fund—including key timelines and application procedures.

Richard Nyagaka, SDYACE’s Nyanza regional coordinator, encouraged the youth to stay committed:

“I call upon every one of you to commit to ensure continuous existence of the groups to reap the great benefit it offers. As guided by the youth officer, always be on the lookout for available opportunity for your action. Our offices are always open for any support you may need.”

Looking ahead, the 25 newly formed YSLAs will undergo in-depth training on YSLA and financial governance. This includes a thorough review of their constitutions to ensure they align with operational realities. Already, YSW has supported three youth clubs under the United Destiny Shapers Youth Empowerment Centre in updating their constitutions to reflect their growth and evolving goals.

These youth saving clubs are more than just financial tools — they’re platforms for leadership, community, and long-term impact. And this is just the beginning.
