Improving Women’s Health Globally: A Smart Research Investment for the EU

Beyond alleviating the unnecessary suffering of half the world’s population, tackling the women’s health gap has the potential to deliver progress society-wide, including an annual boost of 1 trillion USD to the global economy by 2040. Many intervention areas require attention and improvement to achieve progress in women’s health. Central to this progress is mobilising funding for the development of women-centric health technologies, and putting in place policies and programmes to ensure that women’s needs are factored into research.

The EU as a Leader in Global Health: A Roadmap to Better Futures

Global health reflects the idea that the health of all people across the world is connected: diseases do not stop at borders and most health issues and determinants are transnational. As such, our efforts to combat them must transcend borders and socio-economic divides: collaboration is key to developing the solutions to the world’s most pressing health challenges. As newly elected Members of the European Parliament, MEPs have the unique opportunity to shape not only the direction of Europe but also the future of our world.

Towards a stronger HERA with an ambitious global health dimension

In 2021, the EU created the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) to strengthen the Union’s ability to prevent, detect and respond to serious cross-border health threats. Three years after its creation, HERA is undergoing its first revision. To ensure that HERA adds value at the EU level and continues to develop its global health dimension, DSW puts forward the following recommendations in this policy paper.
